The Future of Rail in the Cardiff Capital Region
Rail is an essential part of South East Wales’ transport network, providing connections between communities, businesses, and key services. As the region grows, so too must our rail system—to offer more reliable, accessible, and sustainable travel choices.
The Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) is working closely with partners, including Transport for Wales (TfW) and Network Rail, to support improvements that will strengthen our rail network and ensure it meets future needs.
Improving Connectivity
Better rail links help people get to work, education, and leisure more easily. Future plans include:
- Enhancing integration between rail and bus services to make journeys smoother
- Exploring opportunities for new stations and service improvements
- Addressing network constraints to increase reliability and capacity
Building a More Resilient Network
With growing demand for sustainable transport, rail will play a key role in reducing emissions and supporting climate goals. Priorities include:
- Expanding electrification and improving infrastructure to create a more efficient system
- Supporting investment in station accessibility and passenger facilities
- Strengthening links across the region, including better cross-valley connections
Supporting Growth and Investment
A well-connected rail network is vital for economic development. CCR will continue working with partners to:
- Improve services between key locations such as Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, and Bristol
- Make better use of existing rail corridors to serve more communities
- Explore opportunities for long-term network expansion as part of the Metro system
While CCR does not directly control rail infrastructure, we recognise the importance of a strong, well-planned network and will continue collaborating with the UK and Welsh governments to ensure the region benefits from future investment.
