Our region
Our Region
CCR is varied and includes settlements from major cities to a diverse mix of rural and coastal communities, former industrial heartlands in the Valleys, market towns, and Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.
Our economy is diverse, and our industrial heritage is evolving; we are home to key clusters including compound semiconductors, fintech, cybersecurity and analytics, creative, medtech and energy and environment.
We have a strong ecosystem of skills, knowledge, research and industry collaboration. CCR benefits from 4 universities, 6 Further Education colleges, and 75,000 students.
When considering transport, CCR faces significant challenges, such as peak-time congestion on key commuter routes, and disparities between coastal communities and inland areas. In order to tackle economic disparities, health inequalities and land use challenges, Transport for CCR will aim to develop and deliver a transport network that will become integrated and connected, to enable our communities to become more prosperous.
Regional Transport
Good transport provision can play a positive role in supporting access to jobs, healthcare, and opportunities, whereas costly and poorly integrated transport systems can adversely increase the strain on our society. Poor air quality, often caused by high car usage and low public transport use, contributes to health issues. This RTP aims to address these challenges by improving transport infrastructure within the Region and ensuring that future developments align with sustainable transport principles.
Transport for CCR aims to present an ambitious plan for transport, alongside our new CJC powers in strategic planning and economic wellbeing, to address the regional challenges that we face in respect of growing our economy and enabling more equity to enhance the lives of our people. Transport for CCR distinctly focuses on our region in the national, UK and wider context.
CCR’s role within the region focuses on providing the strategic direction, whilst the Local Authorities are the delivery agents for new highways, public transport, park & ride, and Active Travel projects.
Our transport network currently includes approximately:
- 20 bus stations
- 9000 miles of local and strategic roads
- 10,000 miles of footways
- 9,500 bus stops
- 24 park and ride sites
Our Aims for the Region
Transport for CCR is designed to deliver tangible benefits that will transform the way we live and travel. By implementing the initiatives proposed in the draft Regional Transport Delivery Plan (RTDP), we aim to create a transport network that is not only efficient and reliable but also inclusive and sustainable.
Here’s what we aim to achieve:
- A more accessible, affordable, safe, and welcoming transport network for all.
- An efficient and reliable public transport network that is more competitive with private car journeys, both in cost and time.
- Integration between transport planning and other strategic plans, prioritising new developments in sustainable and accessible locations.
- Using technology to better manage growing demand on the system.
- Connecting key tourist destinations through sustainable modes of transport.
- Improving air quality.
- Ensuring our transport network is resilient to inclement weather.
- Better use of our existing road network and reducing congestion.
